Nissho Besso is a large hagato with the few Japanese-style two-storied wooden building in the center of Kyoto. A luxurious Japanese garden is placed in the center of the site. The garden was beamed Eikyou 8 (1436) and gather the best of modern architecture, retaining Kyoto flavor and calm posture.
Originally, the grounds of Nissho-Besso
were of residence of Shinbei Urai, who was a silk guild trader and tea ceremony master during the Kyoho period (1716-1736).
Shinbei also enjoyed making utensils, as was customary for tea ceremony masters at that time.
According to literature, there was a small kiln in Shinbei's mansion, and traces of it can be seen on the premises of the ryokan.
"Shigaraki Tabimakura (traveler pillow) Vase" with a stamp from Sasachikuan - Shinbei's pottery master - from Momoyama period (1582-1592) was excavated from the grounds,
and is currently displayed at the Kyoto National Museum. Pottery is displayed at various locations around our ryokan,
in the hope that our guests could enjoy a little of the beauty of Kyoto ware.
